Looking Foward: 2009

Every year we take a trip back to a past decade, and break out everything from the vocoder to the wahwah pedal, you name it…we’ve been there at least three times. So, why should 2009 be any different? I’m going to be a little brave and name the things I am most looking forward to a year in advance. I am going to stick to 3 for now. If I am wrong, hopefully you all would have forgotten all about it, if I am right, you will be reminded!

1. Dance making a come-back. Sure, Dance music is kind of re-emerging now, with the "Rhiannas" of the world getting increased air play. But, I expect by 2009 for Dance to be like it was in the 80’s. Do not confuse it with pop, the two blend, but are not the same. I am focusing more on the “hard to categorize/electronica/house/club” part of Dance. Remember C+C Music Factory and The Beatmasters? Now its all about Thunderheist and Lady GaGa. You may not know them now, but trust me you will love them in the future. (Check out Thunderheist’s website..www.thunderheist.com, for a taste of their music, especially their single “Jerk It”)

2. Long lives the vocoder. With T-Pain set to release an album next year, it looks like the vocoder’s presence will still be felt. He will create some infectious song that you and I will hate to love (but for some reason still won’t buy). By now, this is pretty much a fact, so I will throw in one more: Ryan Leslie. Learn that name!

3. Old-time Hip-Hop will try to make a comeback and will emerge victorious. By old-time I mean hip-hop reminiscent of Nas, the Roots, Outkast (at times), etc. Eminem will be coming back from, what has been for his fans a torturous hiatus, and hopefully the break has been bad for him as well, I can’t imagine him coming back happy. Dr. Dre is supposed to be coming back, but history has me skeptical. I heard a wonderful rumor that Redman and Method Man are coming together for Blackout 2. I will be in Hip-Hop heaven!!!
