So what happens when the daughter of Guyanese immigrants,is raised in the multicultural city of Toronto Canada in a house full of music? Well you get Melanie Fiona, the newest sensation on the music scene who has captured the ears of listeners all over with her great voice and lovely looks. She has recently released her album "The Bridge" on SRC Universal/Motown Records a twelve track musical journey.
Most people are familiar with her breakout hit "Give it to me Right" where she displays that powerful voice of hers. I'm happy to say that there are many more treats to enjoy also. She discusses having her heart played with on the track "Johnny". She passionately asks her lover to stay and admits that she can be a cry baby on the track "Please Don't Go" as you listen to the album you can see all of the different influences she has in regards to making music. Names like Sam Cooke and Gladys Knight come to mind, and she has listed Bob Marley,Sade, and Patsy Cline as musical influences how about that for diversity.
It was a refreshing album to listen to,not often do you have a new artist come out and truly try new things, and mix different genres you can hear some reggae,r&b, and classic soul in this album. Too often when a new female vocalist comes out the record company pushes her to make a Beyonce record or a track that sounds like Lady GaGa anything that is popular right now. So I give it up to Melanie for not going that route and making a well crafted enjoyable album. One of my favorite tracks on the album is "Ay Yo" where she gives a testimony about her being born to sing her song and also providing motivation to people everywhere over a track that has a little reggae influence and has you immediately nodding your head let me give you a sample of some of the lyrics
If you have a light
Then hold it up and let it shine
Would you make the choice to meet your destiny
Or let this lifetime pass you by
Only you can make it
What's yours is yours no one can take it
If you have a dream
Something you believe
It's time to set it free
Then hold it up and let it shine
Would you make the choice to meet your destiny
Or let this lifetime pass you by
Only you can make it
What's yours is yours no one can take it
If you have a dream
Something you believe
It's time to set it free
So this album gets two thumbs up from me and if you want to hear a creative refreshing album as opposed to the cookie cutter stuff that floods the radio at times Melanie Fiona's The Bridge is a good investment
Stay Up.
