Album Review: Evolution of a Man (Brian McKnight)
(Rating: 4.0/5.0)
Let me clear my throat before I do this introduction…uuuhhh hmmmmm. Ladies and Gentleman this singer/songwriter/producer has sold over 20 million records worldwide. Women from Tucson to Taiwan melt when they hear his voice. He had a debut in the Broadway musical Chicago and has co-starred on sitcoms. He has an award-winning syndicated radio show on 94.7 KTWV along with a late-night talk show on the CW that has been syndicated in over 200 U.S. markets. Not only can the man sing but he’s also a multi-instrumentalist with the ability to play nine instruments! He’s worked with artist of every genre from Puffy to Christina Aguilera to Kirk Franklin. Back from a three-year hiatus with a new album, “Evolution of a Man”, Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you (the 16-time Grammy Award Nominee)….…Briiiiiiiiiiiian MccccccKnight!!
Ok ok enough of that. Lol. Yes Mr. McKnight has blessed our speaker boxes again. The new set, "Evolution of a Man" is full of graceful melodies. The lead single “What I’ve Been Waiting For” is already a Top 10 hit at Urban A/C radio. If you are a fan of B. McKnight then you know how he gets down with beautifully sung ballads and mid-tempo tracks. Cuts like “Baby It’s you” makes you want to “chillax” in front of the fireplace, pour the Moscato, grab the strawberries and woo that special someone.
This album has come right on time as “love birds” prepare to cuddle up for the winter. One of the tracks is properly titled “Next To You” and makes you appreciate your significant other even more.
The R&B singer has spent most of his career changing and evolving with the times. “Evolution of a Man” is a clear definition of his current reinvention. McKnight seems to have taken the time to reflect on his life and his future. There is no drastic change with this LP though, just a few tweaks to help keep his music current and up-to-date.
There’s a song on the album where Brian seems to share how he feels about his recent ex-wife (even after the divorce). “Always Be My Baby” - simply put – says that no matter what happened you will always be my baby. I mean who can’t identify with that? We’ve all been there.
“I Bet You Never” and “Just a Little Bit” bring us to that classic Brian McKnight sound, tempo and vibe.
“Evolution of a Man” is a solid comeback. His fans won’t be disappointed with this anticipated release. Mr. McKnight can hold his own weight; he’s a vet in the game. I’m sure this one will jump up the charts just like the last 10 releases. If you are a true R&B fan, then this is the album for you. Smooth melodies, laid back tempo, and words that are meant to be love poems in Hallmark cards. It’s a pretty decent come-back album. Keep it moving Brian! Welcome back.
