Indie Artist Spotlight: Big Page

Friday, December 18, 2009 , Posted by J. Kerr at 12/18/2009 08:00:00 AM

Eardrum Krushez was given the opportunity to speak with Toronto based rapper, Big Page. Born to parents of West African heritage, Big Page has been wielding the mic since the young age of 13. He decided that if he was going to pursue a career in music, he would also produce, write, and distribute his music under his own independent label, Smoke and Mirrors Records. With tracks, such as, “See What I See” and “I’m Still Fly” (Feat. Drake), Big Page displays a mixed arsenal of style and skill with a heavyweight flow. His street anthems and club bangers are in heavy rotation, so It’s only appropriate we here at EK chop it up with Big Page and get into the mind of the man behind the music. Here we go…
JK: First off, who are your top five emcee¹s of all time?
BP: BIGGIE SMALLS, JAY Z, DMX, JADAKISS, LIL WAYNE.
JK: Every artist has a point and time in their life where they say this
is it; this is my vocation--my true calling. Do you remember when Big Page,
the pedestrian, became Big Page, the Rap Artist? What motivated that transformation?
BP: I WAS WORKING WITH MY OLDER BROTHER INSTALLING DRY WALL IN HOMES ONE DAY AND ON MY WAY HOME I WAS JUST SICK AND TIRED OF WORKING SO HARD AND GETTING PAYED SO LITTLE. I AWAYS RAPPED; BUT DRIVING HOME THAT DAY, I WROTE "BALLING IS MY HOBBY" AND TOLD MYSELF THAT IMMA DO THIS MUSIC STUFF FULL TIME.
JK: You are very versatile with your music and style. What can first time listeners expect when they put on a Big Page track?
BP: TO HEAR SOME SHIT THAT AINT ALREADY OUT.
JK: You have an album coming out under your own label, Smoke and Mirrors Records, entitled “Things Young People Do” (TYPD). Tell us more about it.
BP: I CAME UP WITH THE NAME TYPD FOR MY ALBUM BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE AT THIS TIME IN MY LIFE, MOST OF THE SITUATION IM FACED WITH ARE A RESULT OF ME BEING A YOUNG MAN. SO IT’S ONLY RIGHT THAT I NAME IT THAT. THE ALBUM WILL BE ABOUT MY LIFE IN EVERY ASPECT THAT IS WHAT I FEEL THE GAME IS MISSING.
JK: Aside from your album dropping, what else has Big Page been up to?
BP: WORKING ON ALOT OF VIDEOS. I GOT A VIDEO GAME AND AN IPHONE APP IN DEVELOPMENT. IM ALSO WORKING ON MY ACTING SKILLS CAUSE MOVIES IS SOMETHING I SEE MYSELF DOING ONE DAY.
JK: You¹ve worked alongside Harlem native, Max B, on a song entitled,
“Pimpin”, before his unfortunate 75 year incarnation. How did this collaboration commence?
BP: I MET MAX THROUGH CRIS LUCK, HE USED TO BE JIM JONES’ MANAGER; HE HOOKED IT ALL UP. I WENT TO NEW YORK TO CHOP IT UP WITH MAX AND AT THE TIME HE WAS STILL PART OF BIRDGANG, BUT, HE WAS TELLING ME JIMMY WASN’T TREATING HIM RIGHT SO HE WAS GONNA LEAVE . MAX SHOWED MAD LUV AND WAS A VERY FUNNY DUDE, I WISH HIM THE BEST AND KEEP HIM IN PRAYER ........FREE MAX.
JK: Speaking on collaborations, your club banger, “I’m Still Fly”, features another Toronto based rapper; Drake. How did that come about?
BP: I’VE BEEN KNEW DRAKE FOR SOME TIME NOW AND BOI1DA THE PRODUCER. WORKING
WITH DRAKE IS AIGHT. HE’S TALENTED.
JK: It is without a doubt, Drake has been leaving heavy footprints in the game right now. Do you feel his success has opened doors for other T. Dot rappers?
BP: WHAT DRAKE DOES HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME UNLESS IM INVOLVED..... THE DOORS WERENT CLOSED TO BEGIN WITH.
JK: With so much similarity between the city of Toronto and the stereotypical city of the U.S., what do you feel is the reason why Canadian rappers don¹t get as much exposure as those from the U.S.? If they do get exposure, for example, like Kardinal Offishall, they slowly disappear from the mainstream. Why is that?
BP: ITS SIMPLE, CANADA IS JUST NOT AS COOL AS THE STATES. THERE’S MORE PEOPLE THERE AND FOR YEARS, CANADIANS JUST JUMPED ON EVERYTHING AMERICAN, BUT, NOW PEOPLE ARE LEARNING HOW TO BE PROUD OF WHERE THEY COME FROM AND NOW DAYS ITS COOL TO BE DIFFERENT OR EVEN WEIRD. SO AS FAR AS CANADIAN ARTISTS GETTING EXPOSURE, I THINK IT’S ONLY LOOKING GOOD FROM HERE ON OUT.
JK: In about 5 years, where do you see yourself?
BP: ONLY GOD KNOWS, ALL I KNOW IS WHERE I WANT TO BE. I JUST WANNA SEE MY DREAMS COME TRU.
JK: Where can readers find some of your music?
BP: YOUTUBE.COM/BIGPAGETV, BIGPAGE.TV, ITUNES , TWITTER.COM/BIGPAGE, JUST
GOOGLE ME!!!!
JK: Here at Eardrum Krushez, we’d like to thank Big Page for taking time out of his lucrative schedule to speak with us. Much success to you and your future endeavors and we look forward to seeing you at the top. Do you have any last words for those who aren¹t ready for Big Page?
BP: GET READY.
Be sure to check out Big Page’s mixtapes, Chalk Up Another One Vol. 1 and Chalk Up Another One Vol. 2, and be on the lookout for his highly anticipated album, “Things Young People Do”. You can find him on Twitter and Myspace. And with that, I’ll leave you with a message from Big Page.
My music is tangible to the kid in the hood who desires to get the HELL OUT. I used my experiences whether good or bad to paint a canvas through my music to empower and educate the youth of today" – Big Page
