After seeing so many tweets about missing artists, I was inspired to (occasionally) commit to trying to figure out where all these artist went and what they are up to now. There wasn't any particular reason why I chose Blu Cantrell first. I happened to be perusing through my favorite website (Wikipedia) and her name came up. So below, we reminisce about what she gave us while she was here, and where the hell (that's what my WTH stands for) she went.
Women remember Blu for giving them an anthem to sing along to as they got their Angela Bassett on (don't get it? think: Waitin' To Exhale). Her debut single from Arista (now J Records), "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)" detailed the trials of a woman with a trifling man. Even those fortunate enough to not be able to relate to Blu's issues ponder over what they would do if they ever ran across an unworthy man, and her prescription for a better day, sure sounded nice. She went on release her debut album, So Blu, on July 31st 2001. That album earned her a few award nominations and went on to sell over 500, 000 copies. In 2003 she returned with her sophomore album, Bittersweet, which had the hit single, "Breathe" featuring Sean Paul. While the song was by all standards "a hit", it received significantly less airplay then her previous lead single. 2004 rolled around, 2005 came and went, 2006 rose and withered, 2007 and 2008 did the same, and now here we are in 2009, with little to no word from Blu.
So whats she been up to?
As of sometime in 2004/2005, Ms. Cantrell was removed from Arista's website. But she has kept herself busy working to establish her own independent label, Blubonic/Baby Blu Records, after talks with several other labels faltered. According to Wikipedia, Blu is/was expected to release an album around summertime 2009, but with Fall 20 days around the corner, it is looking highly unlikely that Ms. Cantrell will make it. A fall release may be in the works though as it was recently reported that she has found a distribution deal for her record label. She posted a YouTube video previewing a song off of her new album, and she has definitely changed her sound.
Do you like Blu's new sound? Check out the new video along with the video of "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)" below.
My favorite line: "All the things I sold....Will take you until you get old...To get 'em back without me".
